Modern Kitchens in Derby
A modern kitchen should combine clean design with practical everyday living.
At Duffield Kitchens, we design modern kitchens for customers throughout Derby and Derbyshire, creating spaces that look contemporary while still working properly as the heart of the home.
Modern kitchen design can take many forms. It might mean a minimal handleless kitchen, a simple slab door, painted cabinetry, natural timber finishes or a combination of materials.
Rather than following one particular look, we design each kitchen around the property, available space and the customer's individual style.
Bespoke Modern Kitchen Design
Good modern kitchen design relies heavily on proportion and layout.
Reducing visual clutter, carefully positioning appliances and using wider cabinet sizes can help create a calmer and more considered appearance.
Where possible, we aim to create continuous lines across the kitchen rather than simply filling the room with as many individual cabinets as possible.
This may include banks of tall cabinetry, wide drawer units, integrated appliances and carefully positioned feature areas.
The design is also considered in relation to the rest of the room, particularly in open-plan kitchens where the cabinetry may be visible from living and dining areas.
Modern Kitchen Colours
There is no single colour palette that defines a modern kitchen.
Neutral tones remain extremely popular, particularly soft greys, taupes, cashmeres and warm off-whites.
However, deeper colours such as blue, green, charcoal and black can create a striking contemporary kitchen when used carefully.
Natural timber finishes can also work particularly well alongside painted or matt cabinetry, introducing warmth and texture.
For larger kitchens, using two complementary cabinet colours can help define different areas of the room.
Our designers can help you compare colours against worktops, flooring and other finishes to make sure the complete scheme works together.
Modern Kitchen Worktops
The worktop plays a major part in the overall appearance of a contemporary kitchen.
Quartz and other stone surfaces are popular because they can provide a clean, consistent finish and are available in a wide range of designs.
A subtle worktop can allow the cabinetry to become the main feature, while stronger veining can create a statement surface on an island or large run of units.
Worktop thickness and edge details can also change the overall appearance considerably.
These decisions are considered alongside the cabinetry during the design process rather than being treated as an afterthought.
Made-to-Measure Modern Kitchens
Modern kitchens often benefit particularly from bespoke sizing because clean proportions are such an important part of the design.
Standard cabinet sizes can sometimes result in large filler panels or awkward gaps.
With access to bespoke cabinet dimensions and made-to-measure doors, we can often create a more balanced layout and make better use of the available space.
Our British-manufactured cabinets are supplied fully assembled, with doors and drawers fitted wherever possible.
We can also offer a wide selection of cabinet interior finishes, helping to create a more premium and coordinated finished kitchen.
Integrated Appliances
Integrated appliances are a major feature of many modern kitchen designs.
Ovens can be grouped within tall cabinetry, while refrigeration, dishwashers and other appliances can be concealed behind matching kitchen doors.
This allows the main cabinetry to remain visually consistent.
Where appliances are intended to be seen, finishes such as black glass, stainless steel or graphite can be coordinated with handles, taps and other features throughout the room.
Our designers can help advise on appliance positioning to ensure the kitchen is practical as well as visually balanced.
Modern Kitchen Islands
An island is often the centrepiece of a contemporary kitchen.
It can provide additional storage, preparation space, cooking facilities and informal seating, while also creating a natural divide within an open-plan room.
The size and position of the island are important.
It needs to provide enough space to be useful without restricting movement around the kitchen.
During the design process, we consider walkway distances, appliance doors, seating positions and how people will move through the room.
